the beginning

In 1998, after meeting in a college performance class, we realized we shared a similar interest in character, stories and visuals, and became immediate friends.
The following year, we were invited to the Kennedy Center's American College Theater Festival. Chris’s play, Playing Clean, was chosen for the New Works Festival. Justin was nominated for the Irene Ryan Award competition. Together, we made the finals. Through the many productions that followed, it became clear we had also formed an onstage partnership.
In 2000, we produced our first project together. The play Dawgs – written by Chris and directed by and starring Justin – opened at the Los Angeles Theatre Center.
Chris went on to film school – honing his skills as a film maker, editor and graphic designer. Justin continued to work as an actor - maintaining his foundation in theater, while also developing his craft as a set and lighting designer, technical director, and producer for stage and film.
We were starting to feel the characters and stories that were out there didn’t represent who we were and the stories we wanted to tell. We realized in order to develop our voice in this industry, we needed to have both discipline and creativity.
A partnership works when each person brings a certain viewpoint from their own lens. Our experience with graphic design, editing, production design, strategic planning and prioritization, all combine with our artistic passion to create unique and vivid stories.

Our passion is creating entertaining and thought-provoking Film, Television and Theater. 25 years of experience have taught us the importance of storytelling and its ability to connect people on a deeper level. Deer Dawgs was created to give us a platform where we can dream big and produce work which is visually and emotionally resonant.
